The beginning of a journey
And so my blogging journey begins...
I am beginning this site for several reasons. The primary reason is to have a place to permanently record (journal) my thoughts and life in a place that can always accessed for myself and others in the future. It will be a means to hopefully make new friends with similar interests, but also a place that my kids may get a glimpse to who their father was "back in the day."
I believe that keeping a daily (hopefully) record of my happenings will not only encourage me to be more present, so that I may accurately record my life, but also encourage me to life a life worth recording. I don't want to merely exist from day to day, but to make the most out of each day.
I feel that too many men don't maximize their potential. I also feel that society tries to put man in a box and define who he is or should be. The boxes come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. I don't want to debate what the box should be, because that would just be making another box and me adding to the noise. I think that men, and people in general, should be mastering themselves. The should be getting back to their roots and looking within, instead of seemingly running away from who they biologically were meant to be. There is a reason our bodies are built they way they are with shapes, structure, hormones and hair in certain places. For some reason, men are shaving their hair, wearing skinny jeans or attempting to, moisturizing skin, and attempting to look more similar to women. They have got that market taken care of fellas and they are always going to be better at it. Society as a whole is shying away from physical labor. If you practice physical labor for occupation or recreation you are looked at as if you are not sophisticated or civilized. I hope that idea changes. I don't know how that will come about, but I believe it starts with everyone becoming the best version of themselves. It is who we are called to be.
I have always had this idea and desire to be a Renaissance man. Maybe not in the most literal and historical form, but in a way that is both cultured and rugged. I think a man should be able to wear a tuxedo and go to a dinner party the same day he chopped down a tree, built a fire, skinned a deer, and made a meal for the family. I don't think that men should have to be unkempt, with bad hygiene and dirty habits to be considered a man. And I don't think that a scholarly man who enjoys jazz music and goes to church should be looked at as suppressing his masculinity. I believe you can be the most admirable qualities of Sinatra, John Wayne, James Bond, Dirty Harry, Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan. A man should be self sufficient, but not self serving. He should be a mentor but also humble enough to be mentored. Men can be principled and stand for something, but also kind and considerate. We can be anything and everything in between. Just because two personality traits might be considered opposing, doesn't mean they can't exist in the same person. Emotions and actions are tools that have a time and place to be appropriate.
So in my pursuit of being a well rounded man and mastering myself, my current hobbies are fishing, hunting, woodworking, and attempting to be a handyman around the house thanks to YouTube. I am a strength coach by trade, so I don't consider physical fitness a hobby as much as I do an occupation and obligation. I believe it every person's responsibility to maximize their physical potential, or to at minimum maintain the body they have been gifted by God. I'll touch on my opinions and the value of self-discipline at some other time. I am a Christian and believe this should be the main driver of my life and its purpose. Because of this, I also aim to be a better follower and make time to read scripture and pray daily.
Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you join me in becoming a "Practitioner of Life" and maximizing who you were meant to be. I look forward to the opportunity to both share with everyone my pursuit, but also learn something along the way.
